Embalse de La Bolera (Pozo - Alcón) - Pontones (66 km)

Author: Luis Cano

Translator: Elaine Griffin

This long section, mountainous and rugged, travels from south to north over the easternmost part of the Sierra de Cazorla, climbing to the high basin of the Rio Guadalentín via a traditional gateway to the Sierra: “La Cañada del Mesto”. After we ascend to the basin of the Guadalentín and pass beside the highest peaks of the Sierra de Cazorla, the route enters the Sierra de Segura and the landscape changes completely. The abundant pine forests of Cazorla give way to an arid region of sinkholes and limestone karst formations reminiscent of a lunar landscape. These are the "Campos of Hernán Perea", which we traverse by shepherds' tracks. We reach an elevation of nearly 1800m before descending to the source of the Segura River only a few kilometers from Pontones and the end of this section.
